BEST PRACTICES IN LARGE SCALE FOOD FORTIFICATION

Large scale food fortification (LSFF) can be one of the most cost-effective ways to address micronutrient deficiencies. However, few programs beyond salt fortification with iodine have had similar levels of success.

Although everyone—from government officials to food processors and input suppliers—supports the idea of food fortification in theory, voluntary fortification, and mandatory fortification with low levels of enforcement, raise similar key business case questions for food processors. How significant are the investments required? What impact will fortification have on the cost structure of food processors? Will consumers of processors absorb these costs?

This report aims to codify the lessons learnt and best practices from the latest initiatives strengthening the business case of fortification, hoping that it can help drive greater feasibility and therefore greater compliance with mandatory standards
